Company History
The origins of Walzym reach back to 2016 — not to a boardroom decision, but to two scientific questions: [1] is it possible to develop an orally administered proteolytic enzyme product that meets the standards of pharmaceutical-grade quality while being accessible as a food supplement, and [2] can we develop a stable formulation with proteolytic enzymes for topical application?
These questions were pursued in collaboration with the academic environment, where the biochemical and technological foundations of what would later become the Walzym product line were systematically developed. The focus from the outset was not on speed to market, but on getting the science right — understanding the physicochemical properties of proteolytic enzymes, defining the conditions under which their activity can be preserved, and establishing the analytical methods needed to verify that activity with precision.
Wald Biotech was founded in 2020 as the formal and operational step required to bring this work to market. The company was established as a German-Czech biotechnology company with a clear and narrow focus: the development, production, and commercialization of enzymatic supplement products built on verified biochemical quality. From its foundation, Wald Biotech was structured around deep scientific expertise, rigorous laboratory control, and a commitment to transparency — values that remain central to everything the company does.
In 2021, both scientific questions received their answers in the form of commercial products. Walzym — the first oral product to carry the brand — was launched on the Czech market. It represented the culmination of five years of research and development: a high-dose proteolytic enzyme formulation with verified enzymatic activity expressed in FIP units, tested batch by batch in independent laboratories. For customers, physicians, and pharmacists, it offered something that had been rare in the supplement market: a product whose quality was not declared once and assumed thereafter, but continuously and systematically confirmed.
The same year also saw the launch of Walzym Enzymatic Cream and Walzym Intim — two topical formulations that answered the second founding scientific question and represented a genuine world first. Achieving a stable, functionally active proteolytic enzyme formulation for topical application is a significant technological challenge that very few manufacturers have solved. Both products are based on a proprietary, protected formulation and remain unique in their composition and mechanism of action to this day.
2023 marked a significant expansion of the Walzym portfolio with the introduction of Walzym LymfoVeno — a specialized formulation developed specifically to support venous and lymphatic function. Classified as a food for special medical purposes under Czech regulatory frameworks, Walzym LymfoVeno extended the reach of the brand into an area where the mechanistic rationale for systemic enzyme therapy is well-documented and where the demand for high-quality, evidence-informed products is substantial. Walzym LymfoVeno was successfully registered in Slovakia and Germany during 2024.
By 2024, the Walzym brand had grown into a comprehensive product family addressing distinct physiological needs — including formulations developed for specific patient populations. Across all products, the core principles established at the outset remain unchanged: activity over mass, laboratory verification over label claims, and scientific integrity over marketing convenience.
Today, Wald Biotech stands as one of the few companies in West/Central Europe that develops, validates, and markets proteolytic enzyme products at a level of biochemical and technological rigor that is genuinely comparable to pharmaceutical manufacturing standards. The company’s foundation in academic science, its commitment to FIP-unit activity declaration, and its batch-by-batch quality verification define not just how its products are made — but what the Walzym brand means.
Since 2022, Walzym has established itself as the unambiguous market leader in proteolytic enzyme products and the first-choice brand among customers (in suppl.), physicians, and pharmacists alike.
